About Ragnarok Series
Ragnarok is a Norwegian drama series premiered on Netflix on January 31, 2020. It follows the story of high school student Magne who begins to suspect his small town in Norway has taken on some strange and supernatural attributes.
He soon realizes he has inherited powers and must use them to save his home from an unknown threat. The show takes place in the fictional town of Edda, where Norse mythological creatures have come to life and are wreaking havoc. Magne, aided by his classmate Laurits and another mysterious figure named Saxa, sets out to uncover the truth behind what’s happening in their town and stop it.
They face off against gods like Odin, Thor, Loki, and more along the way. The show has been praised for its visuals, compelling storyline, and atmosphere. Each episode blends fantasy with reality to keep viewers on the edge of their seats.
The characters are unique and relatable, making it easy to follow along with their journeys. Ragnarok is an entertaining show that viewers of all ages can enjoy. It’s filled with action-packed scenes, meaningful messages about self-discovery, and mythical creatures, making it a thrilling watch.
The show aired in January 2020, and a second season was released in May 2021. It is Netflix’s third Norwegian language series, after Home for Christmas and Lilyhammer. The Danish production company SAM Productions is responsible for producing the series. Herman Tømmeraas, the actor who plays Fjor, announced in November 2021 that a third season will conclude the story.
The series has a 7.5 rating on IMDb. According to Wired and The A.V. Club, Ragnarok is an angsty and eccentric climate change fiction similar to Twilight. However, some Norwegian media, such as V.G., did not like the series. They called it nonsensical and criticized the characters, plots, and dialogue.
They also mentioned that it felt more like a Danish series despite being in Norwegian. The characters in the show, set in Western Norway, do not speak the local Western dialect. Dagbladet criticized it as a forced blend of Skam and Norse folklore, which they deemed “just as bad as it sounds.” Filmdagbok noted that it was shallow and uninteresting in terms of politics.

In season 2 of Ragnarok, the distinction between good and evil becomes less clear as Laurits, who embodies the modern version of Loki, the god of mischief, is seen exploring the darker side. Likewise, in the season 2 finale, Saxa appears to have changed her mind and pledged her loyalty to Magne instead of the Jutul.
In the finale, Laurits felt betrayed by Magne and used Jörmungandr, a world serpent capable of killing Thor. Now, Magne will have to deal not only with the evil Jutul family but also with Laurits and his dangerous new creature in Ragnarok season 3 plot.
Fortunately, he will receive aid from numerous gods who were previously introduced in season 2, and there is a possibility of additional characters based on Norse mythology.
